On Tuesday, the Common Council passed a
resolution authorizing a contract with
VMJR Companies for the alterations to City Hall required to achieve ADA compliance. The changes to the facade of the building involve removing the marble steps that lead to the side door of the building and dropping the door down to sidewalk level. The existing door will continue to be used. The marble plinths and pilasters on either side of the doorway will remain unchanged.
Once inside the door, visitors can climb a set of stairs to the lobby level or use a lift.
The cost of the project is $669,500. A reserve for building improvements had been established with $435,000, of which $331,567 remains. The resolution authorizes a loan of $337,933 from the General Fund to make up the difference. The amount will be repaid to the General Fund when the proceeds of a bond authorized in May 2021 are received.

I'd be happy enough if the City would clean up all the ugly in front of the building. Exposed plumbing, crumbling sidewalk, an unsightly pay phone that hasn't been used in years, etc. Hard to believe that our civic officials have been walking right past that mess for so many years without doing anything about it.
ReplyDeleteThe long-time ugliness in front of City Hall is indeed disgraceful, as well as inexplicable. Good luck getting DPW Duperintendent Rob Perry to attend to these things, or even finding him at City Hall. Or the Mayor to lift a finger.
DeleteI also hope fixing the sidewalks at City Hall are in these plans. What help does it do to make the building more accessible if people trip before getting to the door
ReplyDeleteThe sidewalk in front of City Hall is part of the renovations to achieve ADA compliance. Unfortunately, the sidewalk improvements will, if I remember correctly, involve the removal of the trees.
