Another Hudson River School Painter

The names of several Hudson River School painters with connections to Hudson are very familiar to us: Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, Sanford Gifford, Henry Ary, Ernest and Arthur Parton. This week, a biography of a lesser known Hudson River School painter, who was born, educated, lived, and worked in Hudson, appeared on the website Art Herstory: "Laura Seymour Hasbrouck, A Painter of the Hudson River School."

The article was researched and written by Lili R. Ott, great-granddaughter of Laura Seymour Hasbrouck. Among the many surprising revelations about the life and work of her ancestor is that she and her second husband, Frank Hasbrouck, 0wned this house, known as Doric Hall, overlooking the river in Greenport, as their summer residence.

The house was destroyed by fire in 1905, five years after Laura Seymour Hasbrouck's death.

  1. Thank you for introducing me to this artist. What a wonderful story of her life, and her work rivals that of the best of another Hudson River School painter, Durand.
