Long-Awaited News

At the informal meeting of the Common Council tonight, Rob Perry, Superintendent of Public Works, reported that the NYS Department of Transportation has given permission to proceed with the construction of the new Ferry Street Bridge.

Perry said that the bid documents for construction of the new bridge would go out this week or early next week. The date for opening the bids has been set for Thursday, September 14. Perry predicted that, at the September meeting of the Common Council, there could be a resolution authorizing the mayor to enter into a contract for the construction of the bridge.

The Ferry Street Bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since early October 2014, when Bill Hallenbeck was mayor. Funds for rebuilding the bridge were secured in April 2016, when Tiffany Martin was mayor. At that time, it was projected that, according to the timeline determined by the DOT, construction of the new bridge would begin in 2020. It seems now construction of the bridge will begin in 2024, only four years behind schedule.
