Iceboats on the Hudson

A winter of extraordinary cold has some recompense: ice on the Hudson, such as has not been seen for a decade or more. This weekend, the ice brought iceboats, more than have been together on the river for a century or more. The draw was two famous rival iceboats, both restored in recent years and both on the ice this weekend for the first time in the 21st century: the Rocket, first launched in the 1880s by the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club, in Red Bank, NJ, and the Jack Frost, from the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club, built in 1892. The New York Times reported on the event: "Reviving a Rivalry, After Years on Ice."

Timothy O'Connor, who was in Barrytown to witness the gathering of iceboats, provided Gossips with these pictures.

Consider giving keys to select volunteer seniors.
You'll find the fire started and breakfast cooking by 6AM. Meals served all day and adult supervision provided without any budget increases.
