The Location of Dr. Whitbeck's Hudson Hospital

Yesterday, inspired by an advertisement that appeared in the Hudson Daily Register for January 6, 1870, Gossips published the story of Dr. A. McK. Whitbeck and an abortion he allegedly performed, with fatal consequences, in 1875. In 1870, Whitbeck's medical practice, which he called "Hudson Hospital," was located at what is now 413 Warren Street. Because there is no building at that address today, Gossips wondered what the happened to the building that once stood on the site. The answer came in a comment this morning from Chip Bohl, who provided the information that both 411 and 413 Warren Street had been destroyed by fire in 1975 and directed Gossips to the archive PhotobyGibson.com where these photos are found.

In 1975, 413 Warren Street was the location of Ron-Kay Pastry. It is not clear if the building that Ron-Kay Pastry occupied existed when the historic photograph below was taken, although it may have.

Both 415 Warren Street, now the Hudson Milliner, and 409 Warren Street, where Tradewinds is located, are missing from the historic picture, so it can be concluded that those buildings were constructed after the picture was taken. It is not clear if the two-story building at the center of the photo is the same building that housed Ron-Kay Pastry in 1975, but it may have been.

  1. My Mom & Dad lived at 411 Warren Street, on the third floor in 1948. My older brother was born when they lived there.(So probably in the time of 1946 - 1948). In 1949 they had moved to Prospect Street. I remember her saying, probably at the time of the fire, that when they lived there next to the bakery, they never thought about a possible fire. So there was a bakery, maybe not Ron-Kay. According to the city directory that I have for 1933-34, there was a baker Albert Hennig listed at 413 Warren, & lived at 424 State St.
