What's Happening at an Institution We Rely on

WAMC has been reporting about the situation with nurses at Albany Medical Center: "Unionized nurses at Albany Medical Center demonstrate as contract expires." Meanwhile, a similar situation exists with the nursing staff at Columbia Memorial Health, which is part of the the Albany Med Health System: the nurses' union is in negotiation with management for a new contract.

On Thursday, August 8, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., there is to be a public hearing at the Central Fire Station, 77 North Seventh Street, in Hudson. Management, including the hospital CEO, has been invited to attend and answer questions about why, in the words of union members, "they are not willing to negotiate a fair contract so we can get and keep more dedicated employees." Union members report that many longtime, local employees are leaving for better opportunities, while nursing positions are being filled by traveling nurses, who are being paid amazingly well, as revealed by these ads, offering thirteen weeks in picturesque Hudson, during leaf-peeping season, for which the compensation is $3,297.80 a week, for close to $40,000 for the thirteen-week gig.

If you are interested in better understanding the staffing situation at CMH better, attending this hearing is recommended.
