Ear to the Ground

Gossips
has learned that Tom DePietro has filed with the Board of Elections to decline the Working Families Party line on the ballot in November. DePietro, who has been Common Council president since 2018, lost his bid to be the Democratic candidate for the office to Margaret Morris in last week's primary.

Candidates who lost in the Democratic Primary have until Monday, July 7, at 5:00 p.m., to file a declination form with the Board of Elections to drop another party line.

  1. Legally and technically speaking, does that mean one can refer to Margaret Morris as the Democratic Party Primary winner and therefore presumptive "Common Council President 2026-2028"?

  2. Hmmmm.

Must be tough. I am sure there were projects Tom hoped to finish in a 2026–2028 term.

I trust he conceded like a gentleman. I hope Margaret invites him for tea so they can speak as elected neighbors about the operations of the job, how to run things well, and leave policy differences aside.

    Institutional knowledge transfer etc.
