Without ceremony or a ribbon cutting or hoopla of any kind, the new bridge opened to vehicular traffic. Both approaches to the bridge--from Front Street and Water Street--are now complete and traversable.

Shortly after sunset, which occurs today at 8:35 p.m., the temperatures are expected to drop into the high 80s. You may want to take advantage of the slightly less oppressive weather conditions to venture out of your air-conditioned spaces to check out the Ferry Street Bridge reborn.COPYRIGHT 2025 CAROLE OSTERINK
The bridge has been open to vehicle traffic for over a week, but there is more work to be done, including installing a stop sign and other important tasks and details.
ReplyDeleteThe asphalt to concrete to asphalt is particularly ugly and unfortunate.
How about a sign welcoming people to the Hudson River? Please, no whale images!
Also, a crosswalk is needed on the east side covering the long span between sidewalks. Don't count on it, though.
DeleteHi Bill - you may be enjoying a well earned retirement, but have you thought of a part-time career as a commercial and public building inspector?
DeleteBreaking News: Mayor Kamal Johnson just announced that the bridge will be named in honour of former Mayor Tiffany Martin who secured the original funding.
ReplyDeleteSources say this is a thinly veiled ploy by the mayor to shore up support ahead of the general election, where he will be running as a Democrat or WFP (safety party?).
Mayor Tiff could not be reached for comment, though a staffer was seen liking posts about the bridge on Facebook.
Let it be known that the preceding comment was FNI channeling The Borowitz Report.
DeleteThe Onion! π
DeleteAnd a sincere hat tip to Mayor Tiff and also DPW Rob who fought bureaucratic wars long before many us arrived (as Caitie will point out) to get this going.
Just in time for elections :)
