The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, officially begins tomorrow, Friday, February 9. To mark the occasion, at noon tomorrow, the "Olympic torch" in Rogers Park, at the intersection of Columbia, State, and Green streets, right here in Hudson, 6,757 miles away from the action, will be lighted in a ceremony hosted by former mayor Dick Tracy. Hudson's unofficial Olympic torch was a gift to the City from the Kiwanis Club, to commemorate the Olympic torch passing through Hudson on its way to the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
In 2014, when Mayor William Hallenbeck had the torch ignited for the Winter Games, Lance Wheeler produced a video that includes footage from 1980, when the torch passed through Hudson. That video can be seen here.
