Eating on the Run

As the new Stewart's rises with remarkable speed behind the existing Stewart's building at the corner of Green Street and Fairview Avenue, an article in the Albany Business Review reminds us why the new Stewart's needed to exist.

The article, "Stewart's closing Hudson Falls store," explains that the closing in Hudson Falls "was driven in part by space limitations, preventing the company from adding more sandwiches, soup and other prepared takeout items, the fastest-growing segment of the business." The bigger store here in Hudson is part of Stewart's grand plan to sell more food-to-go items.

  1. How much larger will the parking lot be to accommodate all these hungry drivers and passengers (including those desperate souls from Hudson Falls headed here!)? This intersection, no matter what Stewart's does to it, will continue to be a mess, maybe more so. It may look prettier, but it will continue to be dangerous for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. All this for a ham sandwich and a soda to go.

  2. Stewart's, in Hudson now for over 50+ years, was located in the 700 block of Columbia St., in the 300 block of Warren and 400 Warren before locating to its present location at Green and Fairview.
in fact at one time there were two Stewart Shops in Hudson.
I believe that Stewarts and a just few other stores are the only proprietors that have reached the 50+ years of continuous operation in Hudson.
A working class hero IS something to be.
The issues of traffic and pedestrian traffic at Green and Fairview has to do with antiquated traffic signals and extremely dangerous street crossings for pedestrians.
The problem is not the fault of Stewarts but is on State and local government not demanding new signals and safe crossings (see Green and Rt 66) signals and roadway marked crossings.
I wish Stewarts continued success in providing services to the local community.
And should be up and about or need to catch an early train Stewarts opens at 4:30 AM.

  3. Good luck to 'em. The food is terrible. Maybe gas, cigs, ice cream and coffee will keep the lights on.

  4. The large fortress like entrance overhangs are rather dauntingly impressive - hope they finish off the back of the false second story so the neighbors don't have to look at the mechanicals - otherwise the scale is impressive for the neighborhood.

  5. Of the various architectural models Stewarts are building as they rebrand their look this version has to be one of the least charming . imo

  6. Tommy - excellent point(s), but especially the last one about what one needs when one is literally careening down the historic streets of Hudson (in addition to multi-tasking which usually includes tail-gating, blowing the horn, and orchestrating (or are those some other hand signals) to catch that train. 7. Food to go encased in various forms of plastic. Thanks Stewart's! Not much concern of contributing to our climate crisis, eh?
The food quality won't be much better either.
