Things to Be Aware of in the Week Ahead

The autumnal equinox occurred at 3:50 this morning. Summer is officially over. Here's what you need to know as we enter the first week of the new season.
  • Today, Monday, September 23, the Common Council Fire Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. and the Police Committee meets at 6:00 p.m. Both meetings take place at City Hall.
  • On Tuesday, September 24, the board of the Hudson Development Corporation (HDC) meets at noon at 1 North Front Street. Gossips is not privy to the agenda for the meeting, but chances are the acquisition of the CSX parcel and the disposition of the Kaz site will be topics of discussion.
  • Also on Tuesday, September 24, the DRI Committee is scheduled to meet at 2:30 p.m. Gossips' information is that the meeting will take place at 1 North Front Street and, beginning at 2:45 p.m., the committee will be hearing presentations from the three highest scoring firms that made submissions to be considered for the "connectivity project"--the DRI project that combines Complete Streets improvements in the BRIDGE District with streetscape enhancements on Cross Street and rebuilding the Second Street stairs. The plan is to hear presentations from three firms, but at the committee's last meeting, only two firms were identified: Arterial and NV5. The third firm has undoubtedly been identified by the committee, but that information has not yet been shared.
  • Also on Tuesday, September 24, the Tourism Board meets at 5:30 p.m. at 1 North Front Street. The board now has a new member appointed by the Common Council: Sidney Long, a popular favorite with the most vocal critics of the Tourism Board and the work it has done thus far.
  • On Wednesday, September 25, the Common Council Legal Committee meets at 6:15 p.m. in City Hall. One topic of discussion may be short-term rentals--both the moratorium on creating any new short-term rental facility, which is now ripening on the aldermen's desks, and legislation to limit the development of short-term rental facilities in the long term. The committee has also been discussing two alternative laws to address the issue of substandard sidewalks in Hudson: one that would authorize the City to "remedy deficient sidewalks and assess the cost of same as a lien against the real property of the adjoining landowner"; another that would establish a Sidewalk Improvement District and levy an annual maintenance fee on all property owners.

  • On Friday, September 27, the Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public hearing on the design of the new building to be constructed at 211 Warren Street, to replace the historic building that had to be demolished last fall. The public hearing begins at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall, after which the HPC will conduct its regular meeting.
  • Saturday, September 28, is the last night you can park your car for the night on either side of the street and not risk getting a ticket. After this coming Saturday, alternate side of the street rules are back in effect for overnight parking. When you park your car before midnight, intending to leave it there until morning, park it on the odd side of the street (where house numbers are odd) if the date of the next day is odd or on the even side if the date of the next day is even.
