Flooding Alert for Route 9G

Gossips has just learned that Route 9G is closed in both directions just beyond Power Avenue--right where the controversial Colarusso "haul road" will cross 9G on its way to the river.

This is the second time this stretch of Route 9G has flooded since the Planning Board granted site plan approval to the haul road only a month ago, on December 12. It will be remembered that one of the two conditions that would allow Colarusso to use the streets of Hudson to transport gravel to the river after the haul road is constructed is any situation that makes the road impassable. It would seem that flooding at the intersection of the haul road with 9G might be sufficient to make the haul road impassible. Even after the haul road is constructed, it is likely we will still have to put up with gravel trucks on the streets of Hudson with some frequency.

  1. The last paragraph is purposely misleading. Yes, there have been multiple flood events closing Route 9G, which in theory would divert the trucks to the city route. HOWEVER, the planning board's consultant confirmed multiple times that there are very few situations in which 9G would be flooded and the dock wouldn't be. This means the trucks would not be running at all in flood events such as the ones that have just occurred.

    1. Appears today is one of those 'very few situations', where 9G was closed, yet they were running the trucks all day.

    2. I believe, aubreyca, that Ryan Weitz has talking about the haul road through South Bay when he said if it was flooded the dock would be too. I don't think he was talking about the intersection with 9G, which floods quite often.

    3. David, That is because the haul road was not affected by the flood. It always floods in the same area, about 100 feet passed the haul road. . It has never reached the area where the haul road is. I grew up in lower Greenport and have travelled 9G many times over the years and it has always flooded in the same exact location, which is at the bottom of Mt. Merino

  2. I was down out at the flooded & closed off section of 9G and passed the haul road to get there. The flood wasn't very close to the haul road today from what I saw, but I suppose it could be at some point.

  3. I also wonder about that field off of Mill St, where the mayor wants to build a giant apartment complex. It flooded during the last big rain event. Compounded by the fact it's a one way in and out street.
