In the Lobby of the Library

On Tuesday, Gossips reported about an exhibition of photographs from the History Room's extensive collection currently on display in the lobby of the Hudson Area Library at 51 North Fifth Street. That post included one of the photographs on display, one showing the Hudson post office under construction in 1912. Today, we share another photograph from the exhibition. This one shows the audience at the opening of The Playhouse Theatre on March 25, 1912. They were there to see the play Everywoman: A Modern Morality Play, by Walter Browne.

The Playhouse, which seated 1,500, stood at 347 Warren Street, now the site of BackBar. It was a movie house and also a live music and theater venue which brought well-known performers, musicians, and shows to Hudson. In its day, it was the center of theatrical activity in Hudson. Its slogan was: "The modern way to enjoy life, with a modern theatre to enjoy it in."

On the evening of February 25, 1938, The Playhouse was irreparably damaged by fire. It was never reopened.

To see the rest of the exhibit, go to the Hudson Area Library and linger in the lobby. To learn more about The Playhouse, you can explore the William E. Kline Hudson Playhouse Collection in the History Room at the library.

  1. I sent the photo of the interior of The Playhouse to the Hudson Area Library for their collection. Brenda Shufelt, from the library's History Room asked if they could scan a copy after seeing it on my FB post. I also had an original souvenir opening day book, but they already had one.
I was given both a few years ago from the family of a longtime next door neighbor who had passed away. They knew I would definitely be interested.
