Following Up

On December 27, 2023, Gossips posted about a notice that appeared in the Hudson Weekly Star for January 1, 1874, reporting that Frederic Church had completed "one of the largest landscapes he has painted for a long time." The painting was Syria by the Sea, and it was painted for James Frederick Joy of Detroit. In 1910, Joy's widow donated the painting to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Today, a Gossips reader visiting DIA provided this photograph of the painting on display there.
