For Those Intrigued by Hudson History

The History Room at the Hudson Area Library recently archived its extensive collection of photographs--more than a thousand images that have come into the possession of the library over the years. These photographs, which date from the early 19th century to the first decade of the 21st century, depict people, buildings, landscapes, homes, events, schools, infrastructure, local businesses, community organizations, and other activities in Hudson and Columbia County. The collection consists of many original black-and-white and color photographic prints, including cyanotype, daguerreotype, and albumen.

A selection of photographs from the History Room collection, chosen to highlight the breadth of the collection, is now on display in the lobby of the Hudson Area Library, 51 North Fifth Street. To pique your interest and encourage you to pay a visit to the library, here is one of the photographs included in the exhibit. It shows the Hudson post office under construction in 1912.

Over the next couple of days, Gossips will be sharing more of the images currently on display in the lobby of the library. To explore the entire collection, visit historyroom.hudsonarealibrary.org. To inquire about ordering copies of photographs or maps in the History Room collections, email brenda.shufelt@hudsonarealibrary.org. Many generous people have donated photographs to the History Room, and those donated images, in large part, comprise the collection. People who wish to donate photographs that represent the history of diverse Hudson, Greenport, and Stockport communities should contact brenda.shufelt@hudsonarealibrary.org.
