A two-thirds majority is required to
override a mayoral veto. A two-thirds majority is 1,350 aye votes. The resolution to override
the mayor's veto of the amendments to the mass gathering provisions passed
tonight with 1381 aye votes. The only aldermen not
voting to override the veto were Robert Donahue (Fifth Ward) and Ohrine Stewart
(Fourth Ward), who voted nay, and
Abdus Miah (Second Ward), who, after delivering a long speech in which he
seemed to reiterate the mayor's reasons for vetoing the legislation, abstained.
When the city clerk tallied the weighted votes and announced that the resolution
had passed, there was applause from the audience.
