A Big Anniversary for the Lighthouse

The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, also known as the Hudson City Light, is 140 years old this year.

The construction of the lighthouse began in 1873 and was completed in 1874. Joe Kenneally, a member of the board of Hudson-Athens Preservation Society, told Gossips: "The first lighthouse keeper, Harold Best rowed to the lighthouse from the Hudson shore to take up residence on a crisp fall day and lit the light for the first time on November 1, 1874."

Next Saturday, October 11, is the last chance this year to visit the lighthouse and wish it "Happy Birthday." Tours depart from Henry Hudson Riverfront Park at 11 a.m., 12 noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m., and from Athens Village Riverfront Park at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, and 2:30. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling Hudson Cruises at (518) 348-8993 or (888) 764-1844.

  1. Another Harold Best lived in Canaan in the 1970s in a wonderful Colonial home with barns and land. Would love to think they were related.
