Ear to the Ground

Attending meetings of regulatory boards is often a good way to get news of things being planned. Such was the case at the Historic Preservation Commission on Friday, when Gossips learned that the relatively new but much beloved Thai restaurant, Isaan Thai Star, is planning to move from its current location at 11 North Seventh Street to 41-43 North Seventh Street, the building where Bagel Tyme was once located.

The plans for rehabbing the building for its new use include creating an outdoor seating area at the back.

  1. It was excruciating to listen to the Pedant Architect go on and on about the color of the cement on Malcom Gladwell's new abode when the applicant was there to get approval for stone steps.

    1. This may have seemed excruciating, but mortar matters. I found it very interesting--and disturbing--that in re-pointing the building the decision was made to replace original mortar with mortar that matched in color the mortar that used when a portion of the building was re-pointed 30 or 40 years ago. This decision apparently was made without input from the HPC, as was the decision to sandblast the brick to remove the remnants of previous painting. The HPC and the community do need to be schooled in the appropriate treatment of masonry.

  2. If Isaan wants to go out of business within a year, it is relocating to the perfect spot. It's a dead zone for any retail or food business. B HUSTON
