A Persistent Issue

Wage discrimination based on gender was outlawed in New York State in 1944, during World War II. This past July, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation guaranteeing equal pay for equal work regardless of gender by prohibiting employers from asking job candidates about their previous salary. The problem of wage inequality has been around for a long time, as evidenced by this editorial, which appeared in the Hudson Evening Register 150 years ago, on February 2, 1870.
