Hotel Update

Gossips continues to follow the progress of Hudson's eagerly anticipated boutique hotel--The Barlow, at 542 Warren Street. Last night, the hotel's owners, Russell Gibson and Duncan Calhoun, were at the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting seeking a variance for the awning they want to install at the hotel's entrance. In the grand style of urban hotels, the proposed awning will extend all the way to the curb.

City code does not permit an awning to extend that far over the sidewalk, so an area variance is needed from the ZBA. The St. Charles Hotel already has such an awning, which, as this historic post card attests, has been there for decades.

Last night, the ZBA accepted the application from Gibson and Calhoun as complete and scheduled a public hearing for Wednesday, February 20, at 6 p.m. Immediately after the public hearing, at 6:30 p.m., the ZBA will make a decision about the proposed awning at its regular meeting.

NOTE: The owners provided Gossips with the rendering of the awning shown above but advised that neither the typeface along the side of the awning nor the logo at the end accurately represents the graphics that will be used. They also announced at the meeting that the grand opening of The Barlow is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
