Looking Back a Year

Tonight is the first meeting of the Common Council for 2017. It will begin with an organizational meeting, at which Common Council president Claudia DeStefano will announce the committee assignments for the year, followed by the usual monthly informal meeting, at which new resolutions are introduced.

At last year's organizational meeting, DeStefano announced her intention to establish two committees: a "housing subcommittee to address housing issues in the city" and a "bipartisan committee to examine ward boundaries" with the goal of making a proposal to be presented to voters in a referendum in November 2016. To Gossips' knowledge, neither of these committees was ever created. Although a housing subcommittee could still serve a useful purpose, the committee to examine ward boundaries was rendered completely unnecessary by the Fair & Equal initiative and its successful referendum in November.
