It's Official

Imagine that! Only yesterday, Gossips reported that, while the building at Seventh and Columbia streets that was to become her eponymous institute stood vacant and abandoned, Marina Abramovic was selling macaroons "that tasted like her."

Today, the Times Union reports that Abramovic has officially given up the idea of creating the Marina Abramovic Institute in Hudson: "Performance artist abandons Hudson plans."

According to the article, the estimated cost of transforming the building, which she purchased in 2007 for $950,000, "ballooned" from $15 million to $31 million. Now, it is speculated, she will likely try to sell it.

  1. And it only took her 10 years to figure that out. Even if her plans had come to fruition immediately, the place would have been shuttered by now, because it was such a lame idea. And we as a town are stuck with the fallout of a stupid pipe dream. I hope someone with a valid plan and the means to realize it will be the new owner.

  2. The city of Hudson should use some of the money from the Downtown Revitalization Initiative to purchase the building and turn it into a permanent home for the farmers market, as well as a food co-op. Imagine a small-scale version of the Essex Street Market in Manhattan, or the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.

  3. John, I like your idea, but the grant is specifically for the part of town west of 2nd St. (the 'Bridge District.')

  4. It is irrational to place rigid geographical restrictions on the use of such funds in a city as small as Hudson. Perhaps it would be worthwhile asking the powers in Albany whether flexibility is possible.

  5. I hope whoever doesn't pay $950,000 for it. Never was worth that. And BTW, what happens to the $600,000 she raised in a 'Kickstarter' campaign?

  6. Marina A. project was never more than POP driven PR hype ... magical thinking.

  7. 15 to 30 million dollars? Really? What on earth did Abramovic have in mind?
