A Chance to Share Your Ideas

The design project to revitalize Oakdale Lake and its environs, being undertaken by the Hudson Valley Initiative at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Preservation, and Planning, is holding the first community input workshop this Saturday, October 13, from 3 to 6 p.m., in the Community Room of the Hudson Area Library, 51 North Fifth Street.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the planning process, sharing ideas for how this remarkable resource could be enhanced and improved to better serve the community. Childcare, food, and refreshments will be available.

  1. Few will welcome this idea, but why not include Underhill Pond in the "environs" of Oakdale Lake?

Underhill, which is City-owned and a natural water body, is much abused thanks to the City's serial neglect of its documented responsibilities. Hudson's Conservation Advisory Council has been notified repeatedly about the solvable problems at Underhill, as have the crooks who mismanage the Region 4 permitting office at the NYSDEC.

What good were any of these efforts? For years, all attempts to get officials to take the steps they're already obligated to take have failed.

I attribute government's lack of concern for Underhill to the total indifference of the local public. Is this because Oakdale directly serves human needs, whereas Underhill doesn't?

One of the great regulatory innovations of our LWRP was to extend the State's "coastal boundary" to include both Underhill and Oakdale. Moving forward, why not bundle both water bodies in our concern for local water quality?

  2. I shudder at the title of the gathering "Come Design your Lake." The lake should, and I assume will, be left alone -- it's the park that needs help and the title should reflect that. Hands off the water -- create a walkable trail around the entire lake.
