Cultural Pollination or Logo Piracy?

We expect to see visual evidence of New York City's influence on Hudson but not necessarily Hudson's influence on New York City, so this is a surprise. On Monday, Chad Weckler's observant eye spied an Asian restaurant on Lexington Avenue near 62nd Street calling itself lilliandloo, and he took this picture.

Not only is the name almost the same as liliandloo here in Hudson (Melinda Slover spells lili with two ls not three), but the font and the use of color to distinguish the words on the sign are the same. All that's missing on the restaurant sign is the wonderful swoosh of color that forms a long macron over the double o.

  1. I've passed this restaurant may times, and wondered about it, figuring it was just a coincidence. I don't know how long it has been in existence, so don't know who influenced who, or is it merely a coincidence. But fortunately, what they're selling are so different, and they're not in the same town, there is no danger of confusion. But it is a bit odd.

  2. Macron (Greek: μακρόν [makrón] ) wasn't a word I knew and it sent me to the dictionary. Thanks for the Wednesday morning treat!

  3. slover [AND] company designed this logo for Melinda Slover in 2001, so the pollination was definitely from Hudson to NYC, since the restaurant opened in 2006. As a partner in the design firm founded by Melinda's sister (and NYC residents), I can report that we noticed this restaurant a long time ago and found ourselves harumphed on Melinda's behalf! But, of course, the fact of the slightly different spelling, the missing (and colorful) macron and the small variations in the letter spacing and ligature (not to mention the vastly different industries) make them enough different to conclude that in this case, imitation must be considered the highest form of flattery!

  4. Oh my old neighborhood in Manhattan - I don't recognize anything anymore. Tip of the hat to our LiliandLoo.
