In Memoriam

Gossips has learned that Ruth Moser died this morning.

For as long as I've lived in Hudson, Ruth was my neighbor, her house being a block downstreet from mine. My introduction to Ruth was seeing her walking a pair of greyhounds around town in the early evening. She was devoted to rescuing racing dogs and giving them a wonderful and loving home where they could live out their lives. The greyhound with Ruth in the picture above is Boy Boy, the last greyhound in her life. Boy Boy once escaped from Ruth's backyard and led everyone, including the Hudson Police Department, on a merry chase. According to the officer who finally managed to capture Boy Boy, "A greyhound running full-out is something amazing to behold." After Boy Boy passed away, Ruth transitioned to whippets, the most recent of which was Cedric.

One of my favorite memories of Ruth is associated with the death of George Duguay. George was "the genius of Hudson," a memorable Hudson character, who had lived in our neighborhood--the southwest corner of Hudson--for his entire life, a life that began in 1911. George's favorite flowers were peonies, which he pronounced "pineys." For his memorial service, in the dead of winter 2006, Ruth generously and miraculously provided a glorious bouquet of pineys.

For those of us who take solace in the myth of Rainbow Bridge, we can imagine Ruth, reunited with her beloved greyhounds and whippets, who have been waiting there for her, crossing Rainbow Bridge in their exuberant company.

  2. Ruth was one of the first friends I made in Hudson while working on Mike O'Hara's Mayoral campaign in 2007. When we met I asked if she was married and she "a long time ago". Then I asked if she had any kids to which she said "I like kids, but we just didn't have the time, we were the cocktail set". I immediately said, come and sit over here with me. She was so funny, always cheerful and still kicked ass to the end of her long life. I was happy to meet her and Hudson was lucky to have her. She will be missed mostly because there is simply no one else like her.

  6. Ruth became a friend of my family so long ago it was like she was always there. Her greatest lesson to me is: people come into your life for a reason, then leave. Thank you for all of that Ruth ! Your journey here and beyond is filled with light.

  7. Steve and I are so sorry to hear this sad news. When we first moved to Hudson, in 1991, Ruth was the first person to welcome us into her home, to a cocktail party she gave for her neighbors. She always greeted us so happily whenever we met on the street. She had a kind heart, a quick mind, and a cheerful disposition--and we always admired how hardworking and energetic she was.

I have known Ruth since the seventies. I will miss having conversations with her about local and world issues. She was compassionate about Mother Earth and animals. She was a kind person and to the point. I will miss you Ruth and so grateful for introducing me to so many newcomers especially Dina and Mary on Union Street to me. Planting the seeds of friendship has enriched my life. Until we meet again someday. RIP Ruth.

  15. Ruth sold us our house on Columbia, and she was the sweetest woman. I remember she was there on inspection day, and she brought us sandwiches and drinks. My only regret was that she never got to see the beautiful renovation of the house she sold us.
