On May 11, the Register-Star announced that Tiffany Garriga intended to run for Common Council president. It is now rumored that Garriga has decided not to run for Council president and instead will seek a third term as Second Ward alderman. Also running for Second Ward alderman is Victor Mendolia. Abdus Miah, who has been a Second Ward alderman since July 2007, when he took over the position from Quintin Cross who resigned under a cloud, is said to be running for supervisor in the Second Ward, the position held for twenty years by Ed Cross, who is retiring.
That leaves two people who may be planning to run for Common Council president: Tom DePietro, who ran for the office in 2015 and might have won had 286 people not voted for a candidate who had withdrawn from the race months before, and Steve Dunn. Neither DePietro nor Dunn, however, has officially declared his candidacy.
