In the past quarter century, Hudson has had a few instances of people holding public office in Hudson while living someplace else. Most recently, there was the Fifth Ward alderman who moved to Taghkanic before his term was up but nonetheless continued to serve on the Common Council.
This morning a reader brought to my attention an exposé in the New York Post about an elected official not actually residing where required by law to reside: "Brooklyn state Supreme Court justice using rentals to claim residency." The article alleges that Justice ShawnDya Simpson "has been using a series of rental apartments [in Brooklyn] for more than a decade to claim she's a borough resident" while actually living in South Orange, New Jersey, in a house she and her husband purchased in 1998. What's the Hudson connection? Simpson is married to Jacob Walthour, Jr., son of Jake and Barbara Walthour, longtime proprietors of the Savoia.
