All Gone

The Gothic house on Fairview Avenue, once known as "The Pines," was demolished in February to make way for a new McDonald's.

Long after the big house was reduced to rubble, the little Gothic cottage at the back of the property, believed to be part of the Farrard estate, remained standing.

Below is the view from the parking lot of the current McDonald's on Wednesday, June 30, just two days ago. There at the left, the little Gothic cottage is still standing.

Gossips is quite sure the cottage was still there yesterday, when I passed by shortly after midday. But today, the cottage is gone without a trace.

  1. How shortsighted of the corporate execs. I am sure we will collectively regret this today, tomorrow and 20 plus years from now. Why couldn't they renovate these irreplaceable buildings and have a Hudson-style McDonalds if they insisted on that location? Meanwhile, there is a lot of empty mall-like space nearby.

  2. disgraceful, and what about the mature trees that were destroyed in the process of "progress"? Our planet is entering a period of intense heat, but folks on the Greenport Zoning Board seem to live in the 1950s...we need every tree we can plant, and here they are, uprooting trees that sprouted when Greenport was founded. Ugh.

    1. Not to mention the seas of blacktop out on Fairview at all the shopping areas without a single island of trees in any of them.

I guess we have to wait for the 120 degree heat waves to hit NY for anyone to pay attention.

  3. The whole thing of having shopping there at that corner is a very ill-conceived idea to begin with. Greenport planners have no clue.

  4. Greenport and Hudson really are on polar ends of the spectrum when it comes to zoning and preservation
