More About the Problems at HCSD

The issues of bullying and fighting in the Hudson City School District continue to be the subject of news reports on WAMC. Earlier today, this report by Dave Lucas was aired: "Meetings continue today as Hudson city schools confront ongoing violence." The report includes two sound bites from Mayor Kamal Johnson, who has made known his intention to talk with students, "grade level by grade level," to find out how they think the problem should be addressed.

  1. No one can tell me that the teachers don't know bullying is going on daily and chose to look the other way.

  2. I seem to remember a Register Star article from a few months ago where Mayor Johnson is asked what his priority for 2023 is. The mayor responded that he wanted to see the Ferry Street bridge replaced. He added nothing else, just the bridge. The bridge over the Amtrak tracks is what keeps the Mayor of Hudson up at night, just like the rest of us. Bill Huston

  3. Oh sure. Kamal "talking to the students" is going to fix the problem. It's the solution HCSD has been looking for all this time. How could anyone not have seen it?

  4. While working in another school district, there were times when a student wouldn't show up for class. The reason was that he/she was murdered the night before because of gang violence. On two different occasions the front of the building was riddled with bullet holes as a result of drive bys. I even had to tackle a student because he thought he was a vampire and was trying to bite other students. All that being said, the school rose to the level of "National Mentor School." This took the entire staff working together for years to achieve. Many district from around the nation visited the school to experience this in person. The point is that it takes a positive attitude and determination over an extended of time. And Kamal Johnson, as Mayor, talking to the students is a step in the right direction.
