Riverfront Reconnaisance

A tip from a reader sent Gossips down to the waterfront this morning to discover the restored 1926 motor yacht Freedom moored at the Hudson Power Boat Association dock, just south of their club house.

A little research on the Internet discovered this about Freedom. It was designed by John Trumpy and built in 1926 by the Mathis Yacht Building Company in Camden, New Jersey, for A. J. Fay of Lowell, Massachusetts. The yacht was found on land in Jacksonville, Florida, by Earl McMillen III in 2004, and completely rebuilt and restored, from 2005 to 2009, by McMillen Yachts, Inc., a company founded in 1992 with the mission of restoring and maintaining classic yachts. This picture of Freedom is from the McMillen Yachts website.

On the opposite end of Henry Hudson Riverfront Park this morning, in stark contrast to the restored grace and elegance of Freedom, a gravel barge was docked at the "port," extending well beyond Holcim property, halfway across the mouth of the adjacent slip, and intruding into what is now the southernmost part of our riverfront park.
