Fish and Game, Zak Pelaccio's new restaurant on Third Street, is expected to open around the middle of April. The Barlow, Hudson's first boutique hotel, is planning its grand opening on Memorial Day weekend. And there's another new eatery hoping to open before spring is over and summer begins: Hudson Food Studio. To be located at 610 Warren Street, the new restaurant is the creation of Dave Chicane, whose wife owns Red Chair on Warren, and will feature Southeast Asian cuisine, with an emphasis on Vietnamese dishes.
Hudson's development as a destination continues.
Spring will bring Tortillaville too! Opening Day Friday May 24 11AM, weather permitting.
ReplyDeleteGood piece, Carole. Speaking about Hudson developing as a destination, does Gossips have any information about the future of the old Ackerman's building on the corner of 8th and Warren? Many food rumors were once flying about this location...
ReplyDeleteI don't have any information, Clown Town, beyond what we've been hearing for a while: that it's going to be developed as a kind of Guido's Market. I'll let you know if and when I learn anything more.
DeleteChris Wagoner submitted this correction:
ReplyDeleteUnion St. Guest House was and still is Hudson's first boutique hotel. In fact new signage is on the way for the re-named Union St. Hotel to finally avoid the confusion about it being a B&B which is never has been.
The Union Street Guest House is a great Hudson gem. Charming, cozy and sublime. Well located and clean. Unique and comfortable rooms.
ReplyDeleteBut a boutique hotel!?! I think not. Friends of mine have stayed there and beg to differ, and I have assisted out of town friends with various things while they stayed there, so I have my own first-hand view of the non-goings on. The attitude of the staff, service and attention to guests tend to veer toward that of the twilight zone.
I don't know if The Barlow will meet or exceed the USGH's service standards, but the bar is low.
Chris Wagoner responds:
DeleteHas this become a hotel review forum? Whether you like the services or not of our small hotel the distinction between a hotel and b&b are clear. In fact on all tourism sites we are listed as the #1 rated "Hotel" in Hudson and have been for 11 years now.
I was only stating a fact in that we are a boutique hotel (small, hip, front desk service, gym, lounge, no breakfast with the owners, guests not staying in the bedroom of someone's house, and various other amenities) and not a b&b.
Also, I don't know how long it has been since you had someone stay here but our "services" have gotten much better over the years as we have finally gotten a consistent staff. I hope the Barlow can do the same.. not an easy task to find qualified reliable staff that will give guests the kind of service they want.
Once again someone in the "Friendly City" finds a way to be mean for no good reason. Yep, that good old Hudson mean spirit lives on. So unfortunate.
With all this amazing new energy in Hudson, I think the only element we're lacking is a dump truck route running smack through the middle of our charming little city, through the minority neighborhoods, across our central business district, past an important cultural venue, over a dangerous rail crossing, right past our new waterfront park, and then dumping their loads on the waterfront. If we can somehow manage to include amenities like that, this community is really going to take off!
ReplyDeleteYes Gizmo...and then maybe the "City "can figure out a way to make sure it stays that way for the next 50 years.
DeleteWith all due respect, a correction submitted to a newspaper, or in this case, a blog, is supposed to point out a prior inaccuracy in a published report.
ReplyDeleteIt is very "Hudson" to lash out and accuse others of mean-spiritedness when, in fact, the opposite is the case. No mention is made by Mr. Wagoner that I lavishly complimented his guest house in my first paragraph in my comment above.
My comment was not made "for no good reason" as Mr. Wagoner states. His submission of a correction to Gossips that his guest house is a boutique hotel is simply not accurate, and I pointed that out.
I am sorry that he took offense.
Chris Wagoner has responded to Observer:
DeleteI would not have taken offense if you had left your opinion at that. But to be mean spirited about how my establishment is run, and insulting the staff ("twilight zone"?) had nothing to do with whether we are a b&b or not and therefore unnecessary to the conversation. Again, just mean spirited and pointless. I hope someday, as a City we can move past that type of thing. It's really tired.
As a resident of the south side of Union Street, I must agree with Observer. The Union Street Guest House can not have it both ways....Either they are a hotel, at which point they become a commercial property placed within a residential zone (and are therefore in violation of Hudson's zoning laws) or they are a B&B (albeit one that doesn't serve breakfast) at which point they comply with the zone laws of Hudson...but can't call themselves a "hotel".
ReplyDeleteNew York State is very clear about what consitutues a "Hotel" (required ADA compliance, Fire code with sprinklers, Health filings, etc). Just because a property thinks of themselves as a "hotel" does not mean that they really are one.
Chris Wagoner has responded:
DeleteIn fact we have complied, for 11 years now, with all local and NY State laws including ALL of the above and much more.
Yes, there is a difference between a boutique hotel and a b&b. What you need to learn now is the difference between a "boutique hotel" and a "Hotel."
The point is and has been on this thread: Union Street was the FIRST boutique hotel in Hudson and that is a fact I will stand behind. I'm sure most people could care less anyways and my opinion is just that.... you have a right to your own..... :)
The owners of The Barlow submitted this comment:
ReplyDeleteThe Barlow is excited to be part of the great lodging portfolio that makes up the Stay In Hudson group. We think all the properties have wonderful characteristics and attributes. And we hope that the Barlow can contribute at the same level that these existing lodging properties.
We appreciate the support of all of the existing lodging establishments as well as the community of Hudson as a whole and look forward to welcoming you to the opening of The Barlow Memorial Day weekend 2013.
Thanks
