If you've never been to Middle Ground Flats--and even if you have--you have the opportunity this weekend to go there and do some good for the environment. On Saturday, May 9, the Hudson Sloop Club, Riverkeeper, and the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society invite you to join them in a cleanup of Middle Ground Flats. The cleanup, which takes place from 9 a.m. until noon, is part of the 4th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep.
There are two options for getting to the Flats on Saturday. (1) You can ride over in a power boat leaving from Hudson. If that's your choice, be at the city dock in Henry Hudson Riverfront Park at 9 a.m. (2) You can paddle over in your own kayak or canoe. If that's your choice, meet up with your fellow volunteers at the Stockport Creek boat launch, at the end of Station Road, at 8:30 a.m. PFDs (personal flotation devices) are required.
All volunteers should wear sturdy shoes or boots and clothing you don't mind getting dirty and bring a hat, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. The Middle Ground Flats cleanup is suitable for elementary school-aged children with proper adult supervision.
