In 1961, the Amphicar (a portmanteau word combining amphibious and car) was introduced at the New York Auto Show. Manufactured in West Germany, the Amphicar was marketed in the United States from 1961 to 1967. President Lyndon B. Johnson owned an Amphicar and reportedly enjoyed driving visitors around his ranch in it and frightening them by driving into the lake, pretending that the brakes weren't working. This evening, an Amphicar emerged from the river at the boat launch here in Hudson. A Gossips reader captured the landing.
Wonderful! I spied one several years ago in Tivoli, parked on the main drag, and sporting seaweed on its undercarriage ... happened to be there when the driver got in and drove it to, and into, the Hudson. What a trip. Love that car.
