Tragedy Tonight

Channel 10 is reporting that a woman was hit by a train and killed just before 8:00 p.m. tonight in Greenport.

The terrible incident did not happen in Greenport. Rather, it happened here in Hudson, near the former Furgary Boat Club, now known as "the Shacks."

Update: It turns out the accident did take place in Greenport. According to the Register-Star, the woman was struck by a train and fell into the water just north of Hudson: "Police: Woman killed by train in Greenport." Hudson and Greenport firefighters and the Greenport Rescue Squad set up a command post beside the Furgary Boat Club.

Update: The name of the victim has been released: Anna Podgorbunski, 54, of New York City. The full report can be heard on Channel 6 News: "Woman walking on train tracks struck and killed." The Register-Star also has an updated report: "Police: NYC woman killed by train in Greenport."

  1. Just awful. Condolences to the unfortunate victim's family.

There are places on the north side of Hudson where you can be surprised by a train. One such place is right at the community garden and the shacks. The shale cliffs quieten northbound trains and catch the unwary off-guard.

But the further upriver you trespass on the tracks into more open the terrain, the easier it is to hear and see trains coming from either direction.

By the time you reach the Greenport line by foot which is only tens of feet from the brightly lit signal announcing oncoming trains, you're in the wide open and normally able to hear or see just about anything coming.

There will be more details to come, and consequences too, but nothing can lessen the sadness of the loss of a life.

  2. In this story, the victim was "walking on the train tracks with another person near south of Albany." But the writer then conflates New York's two Greenports, and the story shifts to Suffolk County and the VILLAGE of Greenport where there are no trains.

Typical shoddy journalism, which is possibly corrected by the time you read this.
