Interesting Development

An hour ago, Bill Williams reported in the Register-Star that Peter Volkmann, who is the chief of police in Chatham, had been placed on paid administrative leave by the Village Board after "the village was served with a warrant by state police on Thursday seeking computer records from its police department": "Chatham board places police chief on leave."

A few minutes ago, Mayor Kamal Johnson made the following announcement on Facebook:
I have received and accepted the resignation of Police Commissioner Peter Volkmann. I'm thankful for the work that was accomplished during his nine months as Commissioner. Moving forward, we will continue our work to improve public safety as well as police-community relations. I will continue to work closely with the Hudson Police Department, the Police Reconciliation & Advisory Commission, and Transitions to Treatment. As the great John Lewis would say always forward never back.

  1. I was skeptical of this guy from the start, a police Chief from ChatHam. He doesn't have enough to do in Chatham? Why would we think he gives one crap about the quality of life in Hudson? He didn't have an office here, he never responded to emails and he didn't have a direct phone number and he didn't show up to the first few HPD meetings after he became commissioner. From now on: commissioners of ANY department must live in Hudson. Not Greenport not Chatham. Hudson. What a waste of time and effort, and now the search begins anew. Or does it?

  2. Look in the City charter - the commissioner is the Chief's boss. His duties and responsibilities far outnumber the Chief's. We didn't have a commissioner for two or more years, then we got this guy late last year and he's already gone. Something ain't right. B HUSTON

  3. We in Hudson are lucky to have Police Chief Moore as our head of the police department.

he cares, he is always on deck, and he even has walked the beat.

Perhaps the people of Hudson should bless themselves for their good luck and the condition of the town. Its safe, its clean, and all in all its pretty quiet and calm.

It is good to be grateful for what you have.

  5. We are lucky to have such an outstanding Police Chief in Chief Moore. And, we are equally as lucky to have such an outstanding Police Department.

    1. Say what you will about the HPD, but their budget is bloated. Same with DPW. They are crippling the city. B HUSTON

    2. Hudson is indeed very lucky to have such a professional, competent police department with a responsive and approachable chief in Ed Moore.

    3. Ditto to the Kudos expressed above for Chief Ed Moore. I have had a disagreement or two with him, but he does an excellent job overall under extremely difficult circumstances, and at a salary that is a fraction of what would be the expected salary for his position, which is of particular important importance for a city that seems sliding at warp speed into insolvency absent a rather considerable course correction.
