Of Interest

Once upon a time, Gossips would link to any coverage of Hudson in the regional or national media. These days, with Hudson in the news so much, I'm more selective. Today, I was tipped off to a feature about Hudson by Spectrum News 1: "Booming housing market boosts small Hudson city."

In the report, local realtor Christine Jones is quoted sharing this remarkable statistic: "Hudson itself during the pandemic in one year, from July to July, has sold $93 million of properties sold. So if you think, that's quite a lot of money in a small town of 6,000 people."

The article also notes that, according to Bloomberg city labs, Hudson had "the best percentage of people moving in versus moving out in the nation."

Gratitude to Martin Salerno for bringing this to our attention

  1. Is that figure for the two square miles (and 6k people) that is Hudson or does it include all the surrounding towns we share our zip code with that also get called Hudson?

    1. I don't know. Maybe Chris Jones will weigh in, but I took it to be in our two square miles. A pretty astounding number, which is why I decided to link to this.

    2. Chris Jones has confirmed that "the 93 million dollars was for the city of Hudson only, it did not include Greenport.

"The period measured was July 2020 to July 2021.

"It included residential, commercial and multi-family sale (closings) as recorded by the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). This does not include any transactions that would have occurred between a buyer and a seller not reflected in the MLS service."

  2. Or for that matter the US Census metropolitan statistical region of Hudson which includes the entirety of Columbia County.

  4. Hudson is an "opportunity Zone" tax break for the very wealthy who want to park their cap gains on real estate. Not too many places in the hudson valley that are zoned that way but our whole 2 square miles is. You may want to do some research on this fact.

    1. It’s not zoning. It’s federal economic policy. There’s a vast and vitally important distinction.
