More Hyperbole from the Register-Star

At the beginning of 2022, when Mayor Kamal Johnson appointed Theresa Joyner to chair the Planning Board, the Register-Star declared her "the first woman and the first woman of color to lead the city Planning Board." While the latter part of the statement was true, the former certainly wasn't. Until only six months prior to Joyner's appointment, the Planning Board was chaired by Betsy Gramkow, and Judy Meyer chaired the Planning Board, then a Planning Commission, in the first decade of the 21st century.

Today, the Register-Star is hailing Mishanda Franklin, who will succeed Ed Moore as police chief, as "the first person of color and the first woman to lead the Hudson Police Department." Again, the Register-Star is too lavish with its firsts. While Franklin will be Hudson's first woman chief of police, she is not the first person of color to serve in that role. Ellis Richardson was chief of the Hudson Police Department for more than a decade, retiring in 2013.

  1. This happens when you have new young reporters who do not know the area and don't fact check. I have seen wrong names, misspelled names, wrong street names, etc. Gone are the days of Hometown newspapers with local experienced reporters.

  2. I'll take this opportunity to plug my junior journalism at HCSD https://www.schoollifemedia.org/sln. Since 2016, when we introduced 6 3d-graders to our NYT-recognized curriculum, we have taught over 500 3d, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to the 5ws, the 5 senses, the Q&A, the Press Conference, and the 8 essential elements of a front page. Oh yes, and "the pub party." --peter meyer

    1. Since all good writing is rewriting... "we have taught over 500...about the 5ws...."

  3. As a proud alumni " reporter" of the 1969-1970 HUDSON JUNIOR HIGH GAZETTE (401 State St building) I have fond memories of being reminded of the basics of reporting........"who, what, when , where and why ". Seems our local paper has long forgotten that lesson. I recall the days when the Register Star was an afternoon publication and people patiently waited for the delivery truck to arrive at Basen's , Young's Deli, The United Cigar Store etc. Great memories of seeing Julius, Abe and Sylvia at Basen's or George, Ken, Hamy and Aggie at Young's Deli on a daily basis.
