A Little Scandal

Audra Jornov has the story in today's Register-Star about a former Third Ward alderwoman who was arrested back in July for driving while intoxicated and having illegally tinted windows on her vehicle. The information about her arrest was released only recently after being withheld for two months. One thing the article, which chronicles the former alderwoman's political activities, doesn't mention is that she currently chairs the City of Hudson Zoning Board of Appeals.

  1. I've known Lisa for many years and she is a wonderful individual who has helped me on numerous accasions at the clerk's office. I guess the problem here is why did it take 2 months for this story to come out. This should not be a reflection on the kind of person Lisa is because I'm sure we've all driven after 4-5 drinks too many. We were lucky not to be stopped. I would guess Lisa doesn't have enough clout to have kept this story out of the paper, but maybe her boss, Beth, has that clout?

  2. We can all thank the Register Star for much ado about nothing. They don't even rise to the level of the National Inquirer, which at least uses spell check.

  3. We can all thank the Register Star for reporting much about nothing. I'll be paying more attention to their front page stories when their reporters figure out how to report real news, rather than sensationalize DWI's by someone with a history of community service. Perhaps if the person who wrote this "story" had a relationship with members of local law enforcement, it would have been an item in the Police Blotter months ago.

  4. Manda, if it had been you arrested for DWI, or me, or Carole, the police would have released the information immediately. That's the problem; that's the story. Law enforcement appears to have sat on the information.

  5. Exactly right, Debby. Does anyone remember 1995, when Lou Boice was making a strong run for mayor, and the week before the election her husband was arrested for DWI? That was splashed all over the front page.

The backstory, as it was told at the time, was that, because his wife spent her evenings campaigning, he was in the habit of spending his at the restaurant--bistro, really--that used to be where Park Falafel is now. Knowing this, a police car waited at the gas station on Columbia Street along the park and, when he left the restaurant, followed him home. When his car allegedly strayed across the centerline (and centerlines are rare on Hudson streets), the police car made its move. The next morning, the news of his arrest was reported on the front page.

  6. Well, Carole, you have a good memory. More recently, Tim Rodgers' "crime" was white-collar at best, and did not endanger anyone. But it was promptly reported by police, with his name. In contrast, no matter how good a person you are, if you're driving drunk, or even buzzed, Marty, you do endanger others as well as yourself.
