Are We Richer Than We Think?

Bloomberg Business published an article this morning with the title "These Are the 20 Richest Small Towns in America." Number 17 on the list is Hudson, NY. According to the article, the estimated median household income is $57,336 and 4.7 percent of the households in Hudson have an income of more than $200,000 a year; the median home value is $221,600 and 2.4 percent of the houses in Hudson are worth more than $1 million. That gives us a score of 94.65 and puts us below such places as Easton, MD, Steamboat Springs, CO, Torrington, CT, and Key West, FL, but above Fredicksburg, TX. Whodathunkit?!

  1. The article is a bit misleading, since it is based on micropolitan statistical areas, which are based on counties. So it is comparing Columbia County to other counties, but it excludes counties around larger cities, such as New York, Albany-Schenectady-Troy, Kingston, and Glen Falls which are metropolitan areas. In New York, Columbia ranks ahead of Clinton, Franklin, St.Lawrence, Fulton, Otsego, Montgomery, Cortland, Cayuga, Seneca, Steuben, Genesee, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua.
