Winter Storm Stella is over, and the city is digging out from the snow. It's time for everyone who's been hunkered down at home to get out, and just in time, too, because this weekend is the very last weekend for Fairview Cinema 3. Appropriately, for its final weekend, our only independent, locally owned hometown movie is showing, as its final film, The Last Picture Show.
Peter Bogdanovich's 1971 critically acclaimed film is based on a semi-autobiographical coming of age novel by Larry McMurtry. The cast includes Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Ben Johnson, Eileen Brennan, Ellen Burstyn, Cloris Leachman, Clu Gulager, Randy Quaid, and John Hillerman. If you don't know the film, you can click here to see the trailer.
The Last Picture Show will be shown tonight, tomorrow night, and Sunday at 7 p.m. There are also matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Head out to Greenport (it's just over the border) sometime this weekend to see a classic movie, have some popcorn, bid a fond farewell to Fairview Cinema 3, and wish Bruce Mitchinson the very best in whatever lies ahead.
