Council President Candidates Announce Debate

Steve Dunn and Tom DePietro, who are vying to be the Democratic candidate for Common Council president, have agreed to debate in the run-up to the primary on September 12.

The debate will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, in the auditorium at John L. Edwards Primary School, and is expected to go on for 90 minutes. During the first 30 minutes of the debate, the audience will be invited to submit questions.

Lynn Sloneker of WGXC will moderate the debate, which is hosted by the Register-Star, represented by Mary Dempsey; Jeffrey Hunt, president and CEO of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce; and the Hudson City Democratic Committee, represented by Sarah Sterling. The debate will be broadcast live on WGXC, 90.7 FM or online at

  1. Question: Will the candidates agree to a moratorium on the word "complicated" during the debate?

Everything is allegedly "complicated." Not so.

Agreeing to drop "complicated" as a preface to every statement would be respectful to the intelligence of voters, and may give us a clearer picture whether or not the candidate actually understands an issue well enough to explain it.

  2. Pleased to see this taking place. Thanks to both candidates for agreeing to debate.
