A Hundred Years Ago in Hudson

I discovered this item in the Columbia Republican for March 4, 1919, and decided to share it because it provides a remarkable snapshot of life and work a hundred years ago.

The little building that appears in this picture of Hudson Upper Station is undoubtedly the shanty where Oliver Mackey worked for thirty-three years, guarding the railroad crossing and lowering the gate to halt people and cars when the train approached the station.

  1. They still have these in eastern Europe. Amazing to think of the commitment to job and community and the reciprocal nature with the employer.

    1. FultonHistory.com is a wonderful database of old newspapers. It's the source I use.
