The Columbia County Department of Health has released its numbers for today. Since yesterday, there has been one new case of COVID-19 and no new recoveries, increasing the number of active cases to ten. Five fewer county residents are in mandatory quarantine today than yesterday, and the number in precautionary quarantine remains the same. Three people are hospitalized with COVID-19--a number that has remained the same for nineteen days, since July 29--and, for the sixty-eighth day, there have been no new deaths from COVID-19 in the county.
It's still hard to believe the DOH doesn't track the "infection rate," one of the key indicators suggesting how safe a community is. In fact, it's the number that Cuomo is crowing about for NYS (https://buffalonews.com/news/local/state-and-regional/ny-sees-all-time-highs-in-covid-19-testing-all-time-lows-in-positives/article_e7cadad8-dd75-11ea-8bed-bf41083e881a.html) Is one case of Covid per 21,869 tests good or bad? Someone please correct my math, but does that mean that Columbia County has an infection rate of 4.5%? -- which seems to be pretty high.
ReplyDeletePeter--If you click on the blue tab to the right "COVID-19 IN NEW YORK STATE," it takes you to the state dashboard-- https://forward.ny.gov/percentage-positive-results-county-dashboard--where you will find that the infection rate for Columbia County is currently 0.5%.
DeleteBTW it's not one case in 21,869, which is all the tests that have been done since testing began in Columbia County, it's one case in the 241 tests reported in the past 24 hours, which works out to slightly less than the half a percent the state is reporting, since the state is calculating based on 221 tests.
Thanks Carole. So why does it take all the fancy explaining to get the basic infection rate number?
