It's Not Over Yet

Last week, the CDC released a map of the United States that assigned by county the following levels of transmission: High, Substantial, Moderate, and Low. This is what the map of New York looks like.

Columbia County is designated "Moderate," but not far away, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Saratoga counties have "Substantial" risk, as does all of New York City (except Staten Island, where the risk is considered to be "High"), Westchester, Putnam, Orange, and Sullivan counties.

To put things in perspective, this is what the map of the entire United States looks like.

Time to bring back the masks.

  1. Daily, the Wall Street Journal produces a national map of counties to visualize whatever data is under discussion. The source for the map info is Johns Hopkins University.

Yesterday the Journal mapped vaccine rates nationwide by county, the counties' overall numbers followed by a breakdown for three age ranges.

I was astonished that Berkshire County, which is among the wealthiest in the nation (population 131,219 in 2010) has lower vaccine rates in every category than, say, Greene County, whose figures lag behind Columbia County.

Columbia County actually rates fairly high, with 60.1% vaccinated overall in a NY state average of 66% vaccinated.

Compare our rate to Dutchess, with its overall rate of 54.9%, and to Greene with its overall rate of 49.8%.

Now consider that right next door in Berkshire County the overall vaccination rate is only 46.1%. (The Massachusetts average is 63.8% vaccinated overall.)

Looking at 65-years and up, Columbia County has 81.6% of its seniors vaccinated compared to only 61.1% of seniors vaccinated in Berkshire County.

Now the figures for the 18-64-year-old range:

First, the New York state average for 18-64 is 68.4%, while in Massachusetts the average for the same +18 range is 74.4%

    Columbia County for +18 years + 69.2%

    Greene for +18 years = 57%

    Dutchess for +18 years = 64.2%

    Berkshire for +18 years = 51.6%

So what in the world is going on in Berkshire County, which is among the most affluent in the nation.

  2. Continues...wealthy suburbs of Boston. Wealth inequality could be a major factor, with higher rates of vaccination in wealthy Berkshire County communities.

  3. Columbia County has been bumped up a notch to orange SUBSTANTIAL status.
