Make Your Opinions Known

In June, Maria Suttmeier announced that she was retiring as superintendent of the Hudson City School District at the end of the calendar year, 2021.

Yesterday, HCSD launched a "Survey for Superintendent Search," inviting members of the community to share their thoughts about "the desired characteristics of our next district leader." The survey results will help the Board of Education "develop criteria for the next superintendent and questions to be asked during the interviews."

The survey can be found here. You have two weeks--until Friday, September 3--to complete the survey. Doing so is recommended.

  1. Hopefully the next Superintendent will find a way to bring up test scores and lower the budget.

  2. hopefully, the school board will realize that the most important goals are to deliver better quality education than have have done to date.

The students at HCSD are the costliest in the State with practically the lowest performance.

it is time to get outside people running the system and to stop the patronage game that the Board has played.

being the most expensive worst school system in the state is not good.

  3. I've tried to find out how many students graduated in June 2021, how many does the district anticipate graduating in June 2022 and how many members of the incoming Freshmen class there are. Anyone know?

    1. This might help: https://www.publicschoolreview.com/hudson-high-school-profile/12534. Assuming this information is current, there are 504 students in Grades 9-12.

    2. A little but that data is only through the 2017-18 academic year.

  4. The most obvious answer here is to ensure that Carrie Otty has no role WHATSOEVER in the selection of the new Superintendent. Her incompetence is fully documented. Her lack of education curiosity is also fully documented. I would suggest that the towns of and the villages and the City of Hudson nominate a candidate to sit on a selection board and take this issue out of the hands of Carrie Otty. Claverack, Ghent, Greenport, Livingston, Stockport, Taghkanic and yes, Hudson should form a town and city committee and oversee this process. I will contact the Clerks of these entities and encourage this. These are the taxpayers who will pay the new Sups salary. They should all have a say for their kids' benefit. We need to stop ignoring the smaller parts of this "district." Ken Sheffer

  7. the bad performance of the school system is not real news.

One time long ago I remember this Register Star headline:

Hudson City Schools the Worst Locally, Regionally, In the State, and Even the Nation.

In sum, kind of like the school systems in Mississippi.

However, we all get to pay 10 times more for it. I have read the school budgets. has anyone else ??

  9. Hudson schools needs a new supt. who has a proven record for raising grant money because residents are sick of paying ever INCREASING school taxes even though enrollment is DECLINING. This is the legacy that Suttmeier leaves HCSD. The buck stops with the end of her tenure!

  10. The form the district is sending out is nonsense......of course it needs to be done but let's be realistic here. First and foremost, before anyone is hired both the Board of Education and the new Sups need to take a pledge to freeze the school budget for next year. The federal govt has rained money on them. No one seems to hear the suffering taxpayers who are spending $56 million a year on that system and now everyone is faced with the question......do we stay or do we go? And if we have kids what do we do? A spending pause is needed before any more damage to the community is done. The someone at the district can gather the nonsensical form. results. The venting that is needed is not included in that form. In the 11 years of the Suttmeier/Otty we have given the district about $650 million dollars. Is anyone still breathing?
