In the past few days, a lot of trees have been cut down along the Dugway, which is now the route of the Empire State Trail between Mill Street and Harry Howard Avenue. The devastation has raised concern among many. The photographs below were provided to Gossips by Hilary Hillman of the Conservation Advisory Council.
The trees were in National Grid's right of way. They had to come down because National Grid is replacing its old, outdated utility poles in that area and installing new poles in a different location. The power lines had to be moved because, in their original location, they were overhung by large cottonwood trees, and there could be disturbances in electric service should any limbs from those trees fall onto the power lines.
