The Register-Star reported minutes ago that the New York State Department of Corrections is meeting right at this moment. The suspected topic of the meeting is prison closures: "DOCCS, union to meet, prison closure announcements expected."
Many in Hudson have long hoped that Hudson Correctional Facility would someday be on the list of prison closures. It was in 2008, but protests from the community and the influence of Mayor Rick Scalera and State Senator Steve Saland kept the prison open. Can you imagine what could be if the historic buildings of the prison, originally constructed in 1887 as the Women's House of Refuge, were repurposed and the grounds of the prison, once the Bronson Estate, became a public park?

ReplyDeleteWhen I first moved to Hudson in 2004, there was a rumor that Bard was interested in the property as a second extension campus. Can you imagine what a huge boost to the local economy having Hudson become a college town?
ReplyDeleteIt might be of more use to the local economy (and society in general) to have a STEM campus there.
