COVID-19 Update

The Columbia County Department of Health has released its numbers for today. Since yesterday, there have been 37 new cases of COVID-19. The number of active cases being reported today is 1 fewer than yesterday, from which it can be inferred that, since yesterday, 38 county residents have recovered from the virus. There are 89 more county residents in mandatory quarantine today than yesterday, and there are 4 more hospitalized. One of those hospitalized is in the ICU. There has not been a death from COVID-19 in Columbia County since Wednesday, December 1.

The New York Forward dashboard is reporting a positivity rate for Columbia County yesterday of 11.0 percent and a seven-day average of 9.8 percent. By comparison, the daily positivity rate for the Capital Region is 7.7 percent and the seven-day average is 8.2 percent.

A year ago today, the CCDOH reported 7 new cases of COVID-19. The total number of cases was 1,023, and the number of active cases was 63. There were 220 county residents in mandatory quarantine, 14 were hospitalized, and 1 was in the ICU. The total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 at this time last year was 46.

  1. Again, it would be more informative if these new cases were broken out between vaccinated and un-vaccinated. I don't understand why this can't be done.

    1. It's all about the mushroom management plan: keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em shit.

    2. Just the number of infections and positive tests would be misleading on its own. Vaccinated people can be infected, but because our immune systems are prepared, the duration and severity of the illness is, overwhelmingly, shorter and milder. Since severity of illness is a spectrum without clear points of demarcation besides hospitalization (which at any rate could be qualified by comorbidity), the reporting would get messy. But if 30% of the positive tests are vaccinated people (I'm just throwing out a random number-you may discard as you will), the same people absorbing and spreading misinformation because they don't understand how to read and process data in context will go to battle clad in nothing but confidence and their own tin foil armor.

An overwhelming number of scientists say vaccines help (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/effectiveness/work.html, https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2110345, ). Side effects are startlingly low (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/expect/after.html, NEJM study cited above).

If people who never bothered to get an advanced degree in science would pay attention to the hard work of the many people who did, instead of alluding to whatever nonsense they found from a clearly unreliable source during their 5-minute course of study at Google University, we may never have made it this far up the Greek alphabet, and people could go on assuming Omicron was just the latest villain in a Transformers installment.

    3. Isn't that the truth. Pretty sure anti-vaxxers wouldn't go to get their teeth drilled by a guy who thinks dentists are quacks and drills teeth with a black an decker drill, nor would they consent to heart surgery from a guy who took a surgery course on facebook.
