To Do the Right Thing

MICROPOLITAN DIARY

Dear Diary,
It's sometimes hard to know what's an appropriate response and what's overreacting. A few hours ago, a Hudson resident, struggling with this very dilemma, sent the following email to the mayor.
Mayor, was wondering should a resident report a Bear presence? There was a medium sized black bear on Worth Avenue rear alley around 12:35 today. Having lived where bears have been before, I simply let it be and stayed away. But then wondered if I should have reported?

  1. I looked out our back patio door today at 12;15 to see what was making so much noise only to come face to face with a young bear scaling the deck railing. Nothing between us except screen wire. I shouted to my wife to look out her second story office window and I think my voice scared it away. I alerted the game warden. (There be bears about)

  2. Report.
    why not warn your neighbors?

  3. Bears will not bother you, if you don't bother them or threaten them. Black bears do not look at humans as food, only threats. They have been here way before us, and hopefully will be here long after we're gone. Use good judgment, keep your distance, keep garbage cans protected and enjoy one of the great reasons we live where we do: the amazing fauna and flora to enjoy.
