Here's an Idea

In a My View that appears in the Register-Star today, former Third Ward supervisor and former Common Council president Don Moore reminds us that the Hudson Housing Authority hasn't given up its plan to create more low-income housing on State Street, across from Bliss Towers, and makes an interesting suggestion: "Competition will improve affordable housing." The piece is recommended reading.

  1. I think Don Moore is on to something! The Crosswinds architectural style is much more compelling for the long term and is aesthetically pleasing. Maybe 75 North Seventh Street can be redesigned into what appears to be a smaller scale and less box-like?

  3. Good Morning. Revisionist history can be a dangerous thing.

While I agree with much of Mr. Moore's piece, there are a few points that need to be corrected:

There were no "legions" of people, political or otherwise, advocating for Crosswinds, publicly or privately, and certainly there were no "legions" of people handing out applications.

Early, consistent, sincere supporters of Crosswinds included people like Eileen Halloran, Cyndy Hall, Rick Scalera, Mr. Fisher, Tina Sharpe, then-Assemblyman Marcus Molinaro, then-HCSD Superintendent David Paciencia, and Parry Teasdale, along with many others from the faith community. (I apologize sincerely to anyone I might have missed.)

There were many, many vocal critics from the community, including some Democrats who, after one particular tour, told me, in no uncertain terms, that the view that was lost was "a tragedy".

And there were many fair-weather friends, whose support, on a weekly or even daily basis, was literally dependent on the "coverage" provided by non-main stream media.

Cyndy Hall, my neighbor, was always encouraging, and helpful, and when she requested an application or three, I was always delighted to walk them over to her.

I wish I had known then about the "legions" of advocates and "application ambassadors" back then. . .

  4. And an important PS: Crosswinds would not have been built without the enthusiastic support of then Chamber of Commerce Executive Director David Colby, and the unwaivering support of then - Executive Director of the HDC, Mr. Markou.

  5. I stand corrected, Susan. Legions, hyperbole as a matter of fact, was intended more as a complement to Cyndy’s largeness of spirit and her consequential following.
